Tiny Home, Large Landscape

The thought of ordering a custom camper from the Internet sight unseen made me nervous. Having never been in a truck camper, and not having the resources on Maui to research them made it a big challenge.

After preliminary research on the Internet, we made a list of what we wanted in a truck camper: it must fit in the bed of our Ford F-150, it must be built to go off-road, it must have low clearance and solar power. These requirements immediately reduced the number of camper companies to choose from. Next, we went through the contenders’ websites to find what amenities they offered.

We reached out to theses companies to talk to someone about what was available. The quickest response and best customer service we received was from Phoenix Pop Up Campers owners, Rob and Cari Rowe.

A small family company in Denver Colorado, Rob’s father started Four Wheel Campers in the 1970’s. Continuing in his father’s footsteps, Rob opened Phoenix Pop Up Campers in 1988. Focusing on the personalized off-roading camper market, Phoenix Pop Up Campers offers the most advanced technology in camper manufacturing available today.

For these reason’s we picked Phoenix Pop Up Campers to build our pop-up truck camper.

I started working with Cari and Rob in January to design and build the camper. From start to finish the process took 6 months.

They listened to our ideas and gave us input and direction. They answered these two newbies many questions and explained how things work in truck campers.

I am now the proud owner of a custom 2016 Phoenix Slide-In Camper. My new tiny house on wheels that’s durable, lightweight and has low clearance for backcountry and off-road travel adventures.

Like a little girl’s playhouse, the intimate space is filled with dreams and runs on fantasy.

As I watch Rob install the camper on our Ford F-150, I excitedly compartmentalize our belongings and think about where to put stuff so the living space is organized.
